Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2010) – On a night when three seniors were honored before kick-off, the Occidental College Tigers walked away from Patterson Field with a 1-0 shutout over the visiting Whittier College Poets in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play tonight.
The senior duo of Robin Feldman and Season Falkler-Rodriguez teamed up with Bree Geary, Maddy Rasch and Andrea Loh for the seventh shutout of the season. Feldman turned away both WC shots sent in the direction of the Oxy cage.
While the defense looked to senior leadership, the offense was fueled by freshman. Occidental controlled the pace of the game, taking 19 shots to the Poets' five with 10 on target. Only one found its way past Megan Wessel, Whittier's goalie.
That one came in the 53rd minute when junior Liz Martin found freshman Elissa Minamishin who scored in a fashion that sent the Oxy fans into a frenzy. Minamishin and sophomore Alex Nicholson led all players with six shots, three on goal, apiece while freshman Kellee Murayama and Kate Corell-Buss tallied two apiece.
Oxy earned three corner kicks while Whittier finished with two.
An injured Jesi Sasaki partook in a pre-game ceremony, which included introductions followed by an honorary "kick-off" for the 2007 SCIAC Player of the Year whose career ended earlier this season.
Occidental (10-2-2, 8-1-1 SCIAC) will conclude their home schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 27 when they host the University of Redlands Bulldogs on the Lower Soccer Field at 4:00 p.m.
