Women's Soccer

Tis the Season; Tigers overtake Bulldogs

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2010) - In the final home game on the Lower Soccer Field this fall, the women's soccer team looked to senior Season Falkler-Rodriguez to serve dual roles today. A solid defensive effort was coupled with scoring the lone goal of the game as the Tigers locked up their third consecutive 1-0 shutout in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

In the 82nd minute, on a corner-kick from Liz Martin, Falkler-Rodriguez headed the ball past UR goalie Linzey Smith, prompting her teammates to swarm her on the field.

Throughout the defensive battle, defenders Andrea Loh, Maddy Rasch and Falkler-Rodriguez all had an active role in keeping University of Redlands scoreless, while Martin was seen making plays on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball as she guarded the midfield.

The intensity heightened after the Tigers took the lead.  The University of Redlands offense immediately answered with a pair of shot attempts that kept everyone in the stands on the edge of their seats. After missing a shot off the goal post, the Bulldogs rebounded with an attempt off a corner kick. The corner kick brought with it a battle by both teams for possession in the goalie box. After multiple attempts by the Tigers to clear the ball, UR midfielder Kendall Pegan was able to take a shot that just barely cleared above the crossbar.

The Tigers were able to maintain composure and their defensive presence to secure the 1-0 victory in a game that saw UR control the pace throughout. The Bulldogs fired off 17 shots to the Tigers' seven, but only three were on target for the Maroon and Gray, all turned away by senior goalie Robin Feldman. Oxy outshot Redlands 4-3 in the first half, but the visitors peppered the Tigers' side of the field in the final 45 minutes with 14 shots. UR was led by Pegan and Fionna Connolly had three shots apiece to lead all players.

Oxy earned six corner kicks while UR had just two chances from the corner.

Occidental (11-2-2, 9-1-1 SCIAC) will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30 on the road when they travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif. to play the Regals, who play Whittier tonight. A win would lock the two teams for first place, leaving Saturday as a title clinching game. Earlier this season Oxy defeated CLU 1-0. The teams will kick off at 1:00 p.m.
