Tigers fall to CLU in battle for conference title

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Oct. 30, 2010) – In today's match, the Occidental College Tigers traveled to Cal Lutheran University to battle for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Title.  Both teams entered the game with 9-1-1 records, creating a championship atmosphere for the spectators and athletes. The game displayed heightened defensive presence by both teams, with Cal Lutheran claiming victory on a solo goal in the first half.

The Tigers displayed great defensive plays by Season Falkler-Rodriguez, Andrea Loh and Maddy Rasch as well as Tigers' goal keeper Robin Feldman, who recorded seven saves throughout the game.  It was not until there was less than eight minutes remaining in the first half, that a scramble for a loose ball, off of a rebound, would result with the score changing in favor of Cal Lutheran. The Regals were able to gain possession of the loose ball in the penalty box and kick it past two defenders to find the back of the net.

The second half started off with the same intensity and a heightened level of energy throughout the stands, as Tiger forwards Elissa Minamishin and Bree Geary worked to create scoring opportunities, in hopes of evening up the score. Those opportunities were met with a tough defensive presence by the Regals, preventing the Tigers from answering with a goal of their own.

Occidental (11-3-2, 9-2-1 SCIAC) finish second in the league, earning a No. 2 seeing in the 2010 SCIAC Post Season Tournament. The tournament champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Black and Orange return to Patterson Field on Wednesday, Nov. 3, as they host the semi-final round of the SCIAC tournament against No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 4:00 p.m.

Wednesday will serve as the rubber game of the season with the Athenas. In the first meeting of the year Oxy was victorious, 2-1 at CMS before the Maroon and Gold returned the favor at Occidental, earning a 2-1 win two weeks ago.

SCIAC Champion, and No. 1 seed, CLU will host the University of Redlands on Wednesday. The winning teams will face off Saturday in the championship game.
