Tigers tie in second straight game
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2010) – After 110 minutes
of play, the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen and the Occidental
College Tigers ended their match in a draw, 0-0, marking the second
consecutive double overtime game for the Tigers. Oxy goalie
Ian Powell came away from the game with 12 saves,
keeping the Kingsmen off the board, despite their 28 shot
attempts.
The teams were even after the first half, both attempting nine
shots.
During the second half the Tigers were able to get the ball into
the back of the net, only to have it cleared, due to a foul
returning the possession to the Kingsmen.
CLU seemed to control the ball during the second half and both
overtimes, with 13 shots in the second stanza, followed by five
shots in the first extra session.
Due to a red card during the final seconds of the first overtime
period, the Kingsmen were forced to play a man down, giving the
Tigers an advantage. Oxy was able to get two final shots off, while
playing a man up, but unfortunately neither were able to find their
way into the back of the net. CLU fired off one shot in the second
OT.
The Tiger offense was led by Rob Riccardi
who attempted five shots, including two of the three Tigers'
shots on goal in the contest. Marcus Brandford
took a trio of his own for the Black and Orange, while the Kingsmen
were led by Jorge Martinez and Kyle Fleming who combined for 13
throughout the match.
Today's shut out was the first of the season for Powell, a
senior goalie, who played all 110 minutes.
Occidental (3-4-2, 3-1-2 SCIAC) will host the Caltech Beavers on
Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1:00 p.m. as the front end of a double header
with the women's team (4:00 p.m. vs. UC Santa Cruz). Both
events will be broadcast via a live
video stream and live
stats.
