REDLANDS, Calif. (Feb. 24, 2010) - The result did not favor Oxy,
but the fact that Redlands and Occidental faced off in a conference
match up in women's lacrosse was very positive, as it had shown how
far the sport had grown in Southern California. This was the
first year that the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference sponsored women's lacrosse, and Redlands took home the
inaugural win 18-3.
The Bulldogs jumped ahead 1-0, with just four minutes gone in
the first half, and the onslaught continued with five more goals
before Shannon Docherty punched one home for the
Tigers with 15:19 left in the half. Docherty will go down in
the record books as scoring the first goal in program
history. Redlands responded with 10 straight goals, though,
and went into halftime with a 16-1 lead. In the second half,
Oxy tacked on two more goals by Annie Wolfstone
and Isabel Osgood-Roach, but could not cut into
lead as the Bulldogs scored two goals as well in the half.
Next up for the Tigers (0-1) is the home opener against Whittier
College, this Saturday, February 27th, at 1pm on
Patterson Field.
