THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (March 5, 2010) – In the first game
of the day the Tigers were out-matched by the Cal Berkeley Bears,
16-4, but more heart-breaking was an 8-7 loss in the waning seconds
to Fresno Pacific at the Samuelson Aquatics Center this afternoon.
Leading 6-2 early in the second period, Occidental College
quickly saw that lead diminish as FPU put in three consecutive
goals. With 38 seconds to go in the third quarter, Oxy's
Tessa Bailey-Findley found the back of the next
for the third and final time of the afternoon to give the Tigers a
7-5 cushion entering the final eight minutes of regulation.
While Occidental was unable to score, Fresno Pacific tied things
up at 7-7 with 2:38 to go. An Oxy turnover in front of the cage led
to the eighth and final goal of the game with 20 seconds to play.
Oxy used a timeout to set up their offense, but a quick FPU foul to
Karie Nickle took the offensive threat away from
her and another costly turnover in the 2-meters ended the
opportunity for the Black and Orange to send the game into
overtime.
Earlier in the day Oxy put up just four goals, one in each
quarter, to Division I Cal, who cruised to the 16-4 win. Occidental
looked to junior Julie Monday for a pair of goals
in the loss.
Occidental (1-9) hits the road again on Thursday, March 11, when
they travel to Cal State Univ., Northridge for a pair of games
against Wagner College at 3:30 p.m. and Northridge at 5:00 p.m.
