LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 22, 2010) – Battling back from
some early adversity, the Occidental College men's soccer team
locked up their first home victory of the season with a 2-1
come-from-behind win over Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the Lower Soccer
Field this afternoon.
An early, second minute goal, by the Stags' Jared Bernstein on
an assist from Ian Anderson put the Tigers in an early hole, which
they endured throughout the remainder of the first half of
play.
Coming out of the intermission, the Black and Orange were able
to make some adjustments and as the game got a bit more physical
used a 58th minute penalty kick off the foot of
Ben
Murray to knot the game at one apiece.
The Tigers also used 18 Stags' fouls in the second half alone,
27 total, to their advantage. In the 87th minute,
Nitzan
Sherman, who entered the game moments before with
fresh legs found freshman Douglas
Pentland who punched the ball into the back of the
net, sending the Oxy bench and players into a frenzy.
Occidental's defense or CJ
Grigoriadis, Rob Riccardi,
Pentland and Reid Sakamoto
came up strong in the final three minutes to keep CMS from scoring
again.
Overall, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps out shot Oxy 15-9 and earned
eight corner kicks to the Tigers' three.
Manning the goal for the Black and Orange today was Ian Powell,
who in 90 minutes of action turned away six total shots, five in
the second half alone.
The win pushes the Tigers' record to 2-4 overall, 2-1 in SCIAC
play. On Saturday, Sept. 25 the Black and Orange will travel to
Pomona-Pitzer to take on the Sagehens at 11:00 a.m.
