LA VERNE, Calif.—The most frustrating loss sustained by a team is the game they controlled, but allowed to slip away through careless errors.

The Occidental College men's soccer team came away from their 3-2 defeat at the hands of the University of La Verne (4-5-1, 5-6-1) Saturday night with a similar feeling of disappointment.

"We had twenty-two shots, they had twelve," said coach Rod Lafurie. "We controlled the tempo for the majority of the game, but we made a few mistakes that cost us the game."

Though the Tigers (4-10, 4-6) showed an improvement offensively, highlighted by Ben Murray's two goals, their mental errors proved too much of an obstacle to overcome.

"The loss was fairly self inflicted," Lafurie said. "There was three bad plays on our part that equaled three goals for La Verne.

"We had a better game all around, but we made a mistake, they capitalized. We made a mistake, they capitalized."

The Tigers scored first off an assist from James Kornfield, but the Leopards evened it up to take a 1-1 tie into halftime.

A few minutes into the second half Oxy left an open net, which La Verne's Ryan Estrada capitalized on for his second goal of the night.

After an Oxy penalty kick was netted by Murray in the 62nd minute, La Verne's Erik Brown beat an Oxy defender off the dribble to put the game away.

The Tigers will need to regroup quickly as their next opponent happens to be conference leader University of Redlands (13-3, 10-0) on Wednesday.

"We have to minimize mistakes from here on out," said Lafurie. "We have to move on from tonight and keep progressing forward as a program."
