PASADENA, Calif. — With goals coming from ten different players, the Occidental College men's water polo team cruised to a comfortbale road win over Cal Tech on Wednesday, beating the Beavers 23-8.
Led by Joe Reynolds' (Souderton, PA) game-high five goals, the Tigers (5-17, 2-2) went on a 13-3 run in the second half to pick up their second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season.
Early in the first quarter it looked like Oxy would handle the Beavers from the get go, as the Tigers scored the games first five goals, but Caltech responded with two late quarter goals to cut Oxy's lead to 5-2 after one.
Occidental upped the lead to 7-2 early in the second quarter, but once again the Beavers would fight back, scoring three of the game's next five goals to cut the Oxy lead to 9-5 with 1:30 to play in the half, but that would be as close as CIT would come though.
Brendan Whitmore (Lafayette, CA) finished with four goals. Christian Erwin (Kentwood, MI) had a hat trick for the Tigers. Richard Dybas (Los Banos, CA), Jack Stabenfeldt (Larkspur, CA), Sam Akiyama (Aptos, CA) Jalen Lubbers (Grandville, MI), Kevin Coleman (Huntington Beach, CA), Justin Lim (Mountain View, CA), and Jack Sinclair (Pasadena, CA) all got in on the scoring for Oxy. For Sinclair, it was his first goal as a Tiger.
Goalies Kyle Ruether (San Benito, CA) and Scott Churchman (Houston, TX) combined for 13 saves.
Oxy's back at Taylor pool on Saturday, taking on No. 10 University of La Verne at 11 a.m.
