LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Occidental
experienced an even matchup, Wednesday nigh on Patterson Field,
when they took on visiting Pomona-Pitzer. In a
game that saw both teams fighting to keep a lead, as there were six
tie-ups along with five lead changes, it was anyone's game,
till the final whistle blew.
The Sagehens grabbed a quick 2-0 lead, over
the Tigers to start of the match. Those goals
would soon be matched with two Occidental goals.
This was a pattern that would continue for the remainder of the
first half, as Pomona-Pitzer scored three consecutive goals,
followed by three consecutive goals by the Tigers.
Occidental would go into the half down by one,
to the Sagehens. The first half saw both
defenses fighting to take over on possessions, as the teams
combined for 26 ground balls, with Occidental securing possession
on fifteen of them. Neither team was afraid to
shoot the ball in the first half, with Occidental getting off 18
attempts on goal.
Occidental came out in the first half with two
goals, putting them ahead 8-7 over the Sagehens, on a successful
free position attempt by Sarah Kessler. The Sagehens
would answer immediately off the draw to tie the game back up,
8-8. Kessler would find the back of the net for
her fourth goal of the game on another free position shot at the
26:49 mark, giving the Tigers a one point lead,
again. But, Pomona-Pitzer would answer to make
the score 9-9.
Occidental would take the next four minutes to
go on a 3-0 run, led by Haley Gandsey and Tori Larson, giving the Tigers their largest
lead of the game at 12-9, halfway through the second
stanza. But, the Sagehens wouldn't back
down, after going back and forth with the Tigers, they would find
themselves down 14-12 with less than 11 minutes to go in the
game. This would spark a Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 run
to end the game, giving them the one point advantage when time ran
out.
Isabel Osgood-Roach, Gandsey and Kessler would
each end the game with four goals on the night, while Larson and Lauren Wemple would find the back of the net as
well. Ground balls by the Tigers were led by
Senior Laura Mohler along with Osgood-Roach who each
had four. Hilary Olson and Mary Morrissey were right behind them with three
each. Mohler would also come away with three
caused turn-overs for the Tigers.
Occidental (3-7, 0-2 SCIAC) will meet
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the second time this season, at
Patterson field on the campus of Occidental College, Saturday,
April 2nd. First draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
