Box Score REDLANDS, Calif. – Occidental College led for four innings and were tied for three more, but a three-run eighth for the University of Redlands push the Bulldogs past the Tigers, 4-1, in a Friday afternoon Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meeting between the squads at The Yard today.
The Black and Orange took an early 1-0 lead when Logan Allen scored after a pair of hit batters and a couple of Bulldogs' errors in the top of the first inning.
Redlands evened the score in the fifth when Jason Henning lofted a sac fly, scoring designated hitter Ben Saunders who doubled and stole third.
The score remained locked until the bottom of the eighth when Jon Cavender connected for a bases clearing triple down the right field line, giving the home squad a 4-1 advantage, which they would hang on to through the final half inning.
Occidental had two men thrown out at the plate today.
Although the Oxy offense did not give Ross Pomerantz much to work with, collecting just four hits, the senior southpaw lasted 7.1 innings, striking out eight while scattering eight hits and surrendering just a pair of runs.
For UR, senior Derek Johnson tossed his third complete game of 2011, winning his fifth game in as many appearance.
Allen, Kevin Ozaki, Chris Caldwell and Anthony Salsedo each reached base twice. The four Oxy hits came off the bats of Allen, Ozaki, Salsedo and Riley Smith.
Occidental (7-7, 3-3 SCIAC) host Redlands (8-4, 7-3) for a double-header on Saturday on Anderson Field beginning at 11:00 a.m.
