LA VERNE, Calif. – At the 2011 Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's water polo
Tournament the Occidental College Tigers sprinted out to a 7-0 lead
as they cruised on to defeat the Caltech Beavers 24-4 in the first
round of action today at Las Flores Park in La Verne.
When Karie Nickle won the opening sprint, there
was no looking back as 14 different Tigers found the back of the
net. Juliet Suess and Nanea
Fujiyama each recorded a hat-trick while Katya
Soot, Abigail Martinez, Kelsey Shyba, Amerlia Frey and
Nickle each put in a pair apiece. Morgan
McClafferty handed out a team-high three asssits.
In the start at goalie, Geneva Perez recorded
four saves, allowing just one goal before Sofie
Munoz took over to record four blocks as well.
Tessa Bailey-Findley paced the pack on the
defensive end of the pool with four steals in limited action and
Lauren Ransom came away with three steals.
April DesCombes had the only field block of the
afternoon.
With the win, Occidental will advance to play Pomona-Pitzer at
3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. The winner of that contest will
move on the SCIAC Tournament title game on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
