REDLANDS, Calif. – After appearing in their first Southern California Athletic Conference semi-final game, the Tigers were defeated by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the #18 team in the nation 16-6.
The Tigers found themselves behind the Athenas early and were forced to play catch-up throughout the entire game. The Athenas scored the first seven goals of the game, creating a dominating 9-1 lead going into halftime. The Tigers had ball control and offensive possession for a large part of the first half, but could only connect on one of the thirteen first half shots.
As the second half began, CMS looked to continue their dominance by starting a 5-0 run, increasing their lead to 14-1 at the 20:30 mark in the second half. But, after being fouled, sophomore Isabel Osgood-Roach would find the back of the goal on a free position attempt. Sophomore Haley Gandsey would follow with another Tiger goal halfway through the second stanza.
The Athenas would momentarily break up the Tigers momentum scoring on a free position attempt, before the Tigers would go on a 3-0 run. Rebecca Belding would score on a free position attempt at the 6:15 mark, followed shortly by a free position goal by Sarah Kessler. The run would end with Osgood-Roach scoring her second goal of the night, 32nd of the season.
Unfortunately, the point deficit of the first half, was too much for the Tigers to come back from, as CMS would claim their 9th SCIAC victory of the season and punch their ticket to the championship game Sunday.
Despite the loss, the Tigers maintained a low amount of turnovers with 11 and secured more draw controls than the Athenas, throughout the match.
Sophomore Charlotte Bromley seized five draw controls and grabbed two ground balls in the match.
