REDLANDS, Calif. — Elissa Minamishin scored a pair of goals on Saturday and the Occidental College women's soccer team picked up their second consecutive road victory, beating the University of Redlands 2-0.
"Both were off of corner kicks. It was a team thing," Minamishin said. "Our whole team went for it and I ended up being in the right place at the right time. …So I lucked out."
If it is just a matter of chance that has Minamishin living in the opposing team's net, it sure is becoming a suspicious trend.
Minamishin's goals against the Bulldogs bring her season total to six in six games and give the Tigers (2-4, 2-1) a winning record in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
"She's an intelligent player who's very savvy about her positioning, her movement, reading the game. … And she generally makes good decisions." Occidental College coach Colm McFeely said.
The sophomore forward scored one in the 30th minute and the other in the 67th, both on corner kicks taken by Liz Martin.
But it was not just the continued offensive streak from Minamishin that gave the Tigers the edge. McFeely said the key to the game was the entire Oxy squad coming together as a unit and doing their respective jobs.
"Everybody played their role, especially when we didn't have the ball," McFeely said. "I think overall, the overriding factor is that we went away to Redlands, which can be an intimidating place, and played with a lot of poise. It was a real team effort."
One game removed from her game-winner on Wednesday night at the University of La Verne, junior forward Alex Nicholson continued attacking aggressively, peppering the Redlands (2-3-1, 1-3) goalkeepers with four shots and two on goal. Bree Geary and Taryn Ng each also had a shot on goal.
Oxy has a few days off before returning home to play Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on Lower Field.
"I think (the win) definitely helps with moral because were getting in a good rhythm," Minamishin said. "I'm stoked about challenging these other teams."
