LOS ANGELES — The Occidental College women's basketball team blocked as many shots as Pomona-Pitzer made in the first half and Stephanie Scamman (Northridge) filled up the stat sheet in the Tigers 61-48 win over the Sagehens at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday.
Scamman scored nine points — but it was her five rebounds, two blocked shots and four steals that got Oxy's transition game started after a fairly slow start from the field.
"I just wanted to set a tempo. I saw opportunities and went for them," Scamman said. "Coach told me I have good instincts so I just trusted them."
Scamman, who had blocked only three shots all season coming into the game, had company denying the Sagehens in the paint.
Brittni Walker had a season-high four blocks and Katelyn Rowe (Carlsbad) and Elizabeth Messick (Reno, Nev.) each blocked one.
Oxy was balanced and deep offensively, getting 30 points from its bench.
Liz Little (Littleton, Colo.) led the bench production with nine points, Annika Awbrey (Saratoga) chipped in seven and Crystal Goodwin (Inglewood) had five.
"Any time we can get the rest of the team in the game it's good feeling," Little said. "We're really deep. So when our bench gets a chance to show what they can do, it's really fun."
The Tigers (15-3, 7-1 SCIAC) doubled up the Sagehens (3-16, 1-7 SCIAC) by halftime — leading 36-18 — but traded baskets with Pomona-Pitzer in the second and were actually outscored 30-25.
"Because we beat Pomona by so much last time, people were more relaxed," Scamman said.. "Which is fine, but you need to be competitive no matter who you're playing."
Alexis Sones led Pomona-Pitzer with 12 points.
The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, hosting the University of La Verne at 7:30 p.m.
