LOS ANGELES — With how the Occidental College men's soccer team's offense has been clicking lately, you might have expected to see fireworks when they hosted second-place Pomona-Pitzer under the lights at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday.
But despite a handful of quality chances late in the second half, the Tigers (7-7, 6-7 SCIAC) came up empty in a 1-0 loss to the Sagehens (11-4-1, 10-2-1 SCIAC).
Coming into the match, Oxy had scored 13 goals in its last two games — five in a 5-4 OT win against Whittier on Oct. 13 and eight in a 8-0 win against Caltech on Oct. 17.
Against the Sagehens, their attack still created chances, but without anything to show for them.
Connor Freeman (Mercer Island, Wash.) had the Tigers' best opportunity in the 87th minute, but Rollie Thayer made a fingertip save, forcing the ball over the crossbar.
A few minutes earlier, Jack Day (London, England) had a shot from inside the box deflect off a Pomona defender and Christian Buchmann (Singapore) followed it up shortly after by forcing Thayer into a diving save.
"I thought we created enough chances to win and we defended well enough to win, but it just didn't work out that way," Oxy coach Rod Lafaurie said. "I don't think many teams have put Pomona under as much pressure as we did tonight so we have to give credit to our guys for doing enough to win. … Unfortunately that's soccer sometimes."
With the loss, the Tigers sit one point behind Chapman for the fourth and final SCIAC playoff spot with three games left.
Pomona-Pitzer moves into a first-place tie with Redlands.
Right after a scoreless first half, Harris Levin fielded a deflected ball in Oxy's box, took a touch and finished a right-footed shot in the lower right corner for the game-winning goal in the 50th minute.
Oxy goalkeeper Ian Agrimis (Portland, Ore.) finished with five saves. Ben Murray (Sandpoint, Idaho) had three shots and two on goal.
The Tigers are back in action at Cal Lutheran on Monday.
