CLAREMONT – They ran around for 110 minutes, everyone got to kick the ball, but nobody scored.
The Occidental College women's soccer team and Pomona-Pitzer did pick up a point each as the teams played to a 0-0 draw on Saturday .
Oxy (4-9-1, 3-8-1 SCIAC) went into today's match having split its last six conference games after losing the first five, and continued to show improvements as it battled to the scoreless draw.
Even though Oxy wasn't able to pick up the full three points, the match was a far cry from the last one it had played against Pomona-Pitzer (6-6-2, 5-5-2 SCIAC). The Tigers lost to the Sagehens 4-1 on Sept. 26 at Lower Field, but they have been making strides since the loss as they got players back from injuries and gained more experience as a team, and managed to get a shutout today.
The match was a defensive struggle in which neither team could create quality chances. Oxy opened the match with a flurry of shots—four in the first 12 minutes—but none of them were on goal.
Shots that did find the target threatened neither goalkeepers as Oxy's Tayler Renshaw (Phoenix, Ariz.) made four relatively easy saves and Pomona-Pitzer's Helena Epps made three.
Perhaps the game's best chance came in the 97th minute when Pomona-Pitzer's Allie Tao found the ball in the penalty box and fired it just wide of the goalpost.
Oxy's McCaully Patch (Laguna) had two opportunities in the second half, but both shots were saved by Epps.
Michaela Tsuha (Honolulu) had Oxy's other shot on goal. Elissa Minamishin (Waipahu, Hawaii) had three shots, and Katie McDonald (Pasadena), Karina Garcia (Alhambra), and Whitney Roline (Eugene, Ore.) each added one for the Tigers.
The Tigers will look to continue their recent form when they travel to La Verne on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match.
