LOS ANGELESMatthew Tuckness (Alamo) caught his 19th touchdown in his last 14 games and the Occidental College football team had no problem moving the ball against No. 8 Cal Lutheran.

But Oxy came away with just the one score and couldn't match Cal Lu's firepower in a 56-7 loss at Bill Rolland Stadium on Saturday.

The Tigers picked up 323 yards of total offense.

Tuckness caught a five-yard touchdown from Tommy Edwards (Sherman Oaks) capping a 14-play, 78-yard drive and evening the game, 7-7 with 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The senior wide receiver led the SCIAC with 14 touchdown catches last season and already has five this year despite missing time with an injury.

Edwards, who's been involved in every Oxy touchdown this year, went 25 for 44 for 268 yards passing. He completed passes to seven different receivers. Samuel Stekol (Manhattan Beach) led the way with four catches for 82 yards, Ryan Rodriguez (Oakley) had six for 72, Tuckness caught nine for 70 and Casey Dudley (Sacramento) had three for 13.

The Tigers (1-5, 1-3 SCIAC) stayed with the first-place Kingsmen (5-1, 4-0 SCIAC) until a 28-point second quarter put Cal Lutheran ahead 35-7 at half.

"I thought we came out and competed with one of the best teams in the country for the entire first quarter," Occidental coach Bill Redell said. "We couldn't stay with them in the second though, but I'm proud of our guys effort. … They played hard."

Cal Lutheran quarterback Zach Shultis threw for 368 yards and five touchdowns, two of them to Eric Rodgers.

Teran Mawhinney (Fort Collins, Colo.) had a big day on special teams and on defense. The sophomore defensive back had five tackles and seven kickoff returns for 119 yards.

Matt Matulaitis (Simi Valley) led Oxy with 10 tackles and one for a two-yard loss. Matthew Malos (Bellevue, Wash.) was Oxy's second most active player on the defensive side of the ball with nine tackles.

Oxy running back Kwame Do (San Marino) led the Tigers on the ground, picking up 31 yards on 13 carries.
