LOS ANGELES – Christian Buchmann (Singapore) and Ben Murray (Sandpoint, Idaho) teamed up for a pair of goals in the second half, leading the Occidental College men's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback win over Chapman University at Lower Field on Wednesday.
Buchmann found Murray for the equalizer in the 62nd minute and then Murray returned the favor in the 69th,with some help from Jack Day (London, England).
Murray beat a man down the right sideline, hit Day with a cross and Day one-timed a pass to Buchmann, who finished a right-footed chip shot over a diving Dean Meltz for the game-winning goal. Both Day and Murray were credited with assists on the play.
"I'm so proud of Christian. He hasn't been playing a lot and we've been talking to him," Occidental College men's soccer coach Rod Lafaurie said. "I'm glad that he stepped up today on a big stage and showed us that he can really compete and help this program."
A little more than 7 minutes earlier, it was Buchmann providing the service. Buchmann took on his defender up the left sideline, crossed the ball into the Panthers box and Murray headed in Oxy's first goal of the match and his first goal of the season. In 2011, Murray led Oxy (5-4, 4-4 SCIAC) with six goals and 15 points.
"I think you'll see a lot of goals for the rest of the season from Ben Murray," Lafaurie said. "Hopefully this one will lead to a bunch of them."
After surrendering the lead, Chapman (4-6-1, 3-4-1 SCIAC) had a few chances to even things back up. The Panthers' best opportunity was foiled by Oxy goalkeeper Tristan Cooper (Freemont, N.H.), who made a fingertip save to prevent Duncan Capriotti's shot from evening the match in the 82nd minute.
Chapman's Boston Kimmel broke a scoreless tie just before halftime. Nick Echeverry dribbled into the right side of the box and after a series of step-overs, fired a shot that forced Cooper to make a diving save. But Kimmel was waiting to pick up the pieces and finished it, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.
With half of the conference schedule complete, Oxy remains bunched up in the middle of the SCIAC standings with nearly every team. Immediately following the win they jumped from sixth place into a tie for third with 12 points, with six SCIAC teams playing Wednesday night.
"It's a huge win, but it just means it's still in our hands," Lafaurie said. "As long as we have a shot to fight and it's in our hands, then we're happy."
