LOS ANGELES — Just like she did last April, Haley Gandsey (Oakland) scored the final goal of the game against Redlands, only this time the junior midfielder's shot didn't carry the same weight.
On April 13, 2011, Gandsey's free-position goal with just 6 seconds remaining beat the Bulldogs 11-10 and gave the Occidental College women's lacrosse team one of its biggest wins ever, against a team it had never beaten as a second-year program.
On Wednesday, her left-handed, across the body shot with 2:14 left just ended a sour game on a better note.
Gandsey and Tori Larson (Denver) each scored a pair of goals and the Tigers jumped out to a 4-2 lead through the first 15 minutes, but Redlands scored 11 unanswered goals to beat Oxy in both teams season opener at Jack Kemp Stadium.
Larson scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and Sarah Kessler (Portland, Ore.) scored a free-position goal with 18:42 left, and then the drought started.
Oxy went the rest of the half without finding the net, trailing 7-4 at the break, and gave up four quick goals in the first 5 minutes of the second, three to Crystal Painter.
Painter added another score with 15:15 left, making it a game-high four on the evening.
"They're a good team with strong players and I think there were a few times and a few goals where they exploited mismatches," Occidental coach Michele Uhlfelder said. "They scored 11 straight which momentum wise, is a little tough to recover from."
Gandsey finally broke the offensive lull, finding the net with 9:42 left in the second half, ending nearly a 28-minute scoreless streak for Oxy.
Freshman Beebe Finch-Sanders (Berkeley) scored her first career goal as a Tiger on a free-position, and then Gandsey added her second goal with 2:14, giving Oxy three unanswered to end the game.
"I think the first 10 minutes we were great and the last ten minutes we were solid," Uhlfelder said. "It was the 40 in between that were a little bit of a roller coaster."
Oxy snatched up more ground balls, 18-17, and even got more shots off, 22-21, but the Tigers were less efficient offensively, converting just 7 of 22 shots to Redlands' 13 for 21.
"Really, the big difference was their shooting percentage versus ours," Uhlfelder said. "Everything in the game was really quite even."
Craycraft led the Bulldogs and the game with eight draw controls. Rebecca Belding (Burlingame) led Oxy with four.
Redlands' Crystal Painter led the game with four goals, and teammates Megan Prickett and Jacky Craycraft added three goals for the Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0 SCIAC).
Lauren Wemple had a goal and an assist for the Tigers (0-1, 0-1 SCIAC).
The Tigers are back in action on Feb. 22 at 7 p.m., hosting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Jack Kemp Stadium.
