OXY WOMEN'S WATER POLO TIES SCHOOL WIN RECORD

By Michael Wells

LOS ANGELESLindsay Albino (Greenwich, Conn.) led 11 different Oxy scorers with three goals, and the Occidental College women's water polo team tied its record for wins in a season with a 16-5 rout at Caltech on Wednesday.

The Tigers (21-7, 4-2 SCIAC) picked up their 21st victory of the year, joining the 2000 Oxy squad that went 21-14, as the only team in school history to win that many games. The 2000 Tigers team went on to win the only women's water polo national championship in school history.

The current Oxy squad, which spent almost the entire month of March as the No. 1-ranked Division III team in the CWPA poll, has its sights set on a SCIAC title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I national championship tournament because the Collegiate III Championship was discontinued after the 2010 season.

"We are honored just to be mentioned in the same sentence as the 2000 team that won the whole thing," Occidental coach Larry Zubrin said. "Hopefully we can honor them with a SCIAC title this year."

Nanea Fujiyama (Honolulu), who came into the game No. 1 in Division III and No. 3 in all of women's collegiate water polo in goals, scored two goals in the first quarter for the Tigers.

Corrine Casey (Lodi) moved up to second in the nation in assists with a pair against the Beavers (3-15, 0-6 SCIAC), bringing her season total to 46.

Katie Gibbs (Orinda) and Danielle Garcia (Houston) each had two goals for Oxy.

The Tigers used all three goalies. Sofie Munoz (La Crescenta) had a season-high five saves in the first half, and Rachel Adeleye (Elizabeth, N.J.) and Geneva Perez (Fresno) combined for six saves in the second half.

"We typically try to utilize our depth as often as possible in every game," Zubrin said. "This was an opportunity though for us to try some different looks on offense and defense to see what type of response we would get."

Erin Hoops and Hanna Dodd led Caltech with a pair of goals each.

Oxy plays its last regular season SCIAC game at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on

Saturday before the SCIAC tournament begins at Whittier College on April 27.
