LOS ANGELES — Tori Larson (Denver) scored six goals and Sarah Kessler (Portland, Ore.) added five, leading the Occidental College women's lacrosse to a comfortable 18-11 win over Pomona-Pitzer in its season finale at Jack Kemp Stadium.
Oxy finishes the regular season with its best record in its three year history — 12-2 overall and 6-2 in SCIAC — and will head into the SCIAC postseason tournament next week as the No. 2 seed and host. They'll play the No. 3 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on April 28.
Pomona-Pitzer faces Whittier in the play-in game on Wednesday
The Tigers previous best finish was 2011 when they went 6-12 overall and 3-7 in SCIAC play.
Each year the program has improved substantially from the former. In their inaugural season in 2010, the Tigers were just 2-13 and 1-8 in the SCIAC.
Led by four goals apiece from Larson and Kessler, Oxy jumped out to an 11-4 lead by halftime. In the second, Larson scored with 6 minutes, 54 seconds left to give Oxy a 17-7 lead, its biggest of the game. Pomona-Pitzer scored four of the last five goals in just more than five minutes, but Oxy's advantage was too much to overcome.
Martha Marich and Jana London led Pomona-Pitzer (6-9, 1-7 SCIAC) with four goals each.
Charlotte Bromley (Watertown, Conn.) and Beebe Finch-Sanders led the Tigers with four ground balls each.
