PASADENA — Alex Ayala (Sacramento) had a pair of assists, three Tigers scored their first goals of the season and the Occidental College men's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 win at Caltech on Saturday.
Freshmen Bryar Brandvold (Great Falls, Mont.) and Michael Tonetti (Las Vegas, Nev.) found the net for their first collegiate goals, and junior Marcus Brandford (Seattle) added his first in 2012.
Brandvold scored Oxy's first off a corner kick from Zoe Johnson (Los Angeles), giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.
In the second half, Reid Sakamoto (Honolulu) and Ayala teamed up to find Brandford for a diving header on a corner kick that gave the Tigers (3-2, 2-2 SCIAC) some breathing room in the 80th minute. Sakamoto collected Alessandro Carotenuto's (Scottsdale, Ariz.) ball at the near post, found Ayala at the back post who played it back to the near post where Brandford beat Caltech goalie Wesley Swank.
Tonetti had maybe the prettiest goal of the game in the 88th minute. Ayala made an overlap run, received the through ball behind the back line of the Caltech defense near the 18-yard box and played a screaming cross that Tonetti first-timed through Swank's legs.
Freshman Tristan Cooper (Fremont, N.H.) recorded a shutout in the goal for the Tigers in his first collegiate start.
"It should be the start of a winning streak," Occidental coach Rod Lafaurie said. "It was a must-win game for us to get us back on the winning side. Now we have to move on to Cal Lutheran on Monday and keep adding points."
The Tigers face the Kingsmen (4-3, 2-1 SCIAC) at Lower Field at 4 p.m. on Monday.
