Logan Boyer-Hayse had a
match-high 19 kills.

LOS ANGELESLogan Boyer-Hayse (Boulder, Colo.) tied for the match-high with 19 kills and the Occidental College women's volleyball team was in control of No. 8 Cal Lutheran for most of the first two sets.

But the Regals went on a big run, won a crucial point in Game 2 and beat Oxy 19-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-13 at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Tigers (9-3, 2-2 SCIAC) took the first set and led 23-19 in Game 2 after Jessie Altman (La Jolla) found Alyssa Mort (Tucson, Ariz.), putting Oxy just two points away from a commanding 2-0 set lead.

Then the air came right out of the balloon.

Kasey Rose (Los Olivos) had an attacking error, Cal Lu's Allie Eason and Kylie McLogan recorded kills and Eason scored a service ace to tie the set at 23.

"We were fine until right at the end of Game 2. We got stuck in a rotation that wasn't passing well enough to be able to convert offensively," Occidental coach Heather Collins said. "I even think we had two time outs within that time."

They didn't help. Kylie McLogan finished the longest rally of the evening, then teamed up with Lesley Smith to block Mort for the deciding point.

The Tigers, so close to putting the Regals (11-3, 3-0 SCIAC) up against the ropes, never recovered.

"After that, we just got tight," Collins said. "Basically we slowed down (McLogan). We did a good job of holding her back a little, but we couldn't stop their middles."

McLogan was loud during the end of Game 2, but the Tigers did keep her to 13 kills, a modest night by her standards.

In the third and fourth sets, Cal Lu had doubled Oxy's score before the Tigers got to five points.

Cal Lu had a balanced offensive attack with four players recording double-digit kills. Lauren Rohach had 19, Eason had 13, McLogan had 13 and Shannon Pearson had 10.

Mort had 12 kills for the second night in a row and Stephanie Gann (Tacoma, Wash.) and Rose added seven.

Attacking wasn't at its best for Oxy, like it was the night before when the Tigers hit .323 in a three-set sweep at Whittier, but it wasn't the biggest problem. Oxy finished with 10 service errors, with six different players failing to put at least one serve in play.

"The bottom line is serve and pass," Collins said. "We missed too many serves. When we did serve in, often it was too weak and we were not disciplined with our passing."

Sarah Beene (Gilbert, Ariz.) led Oxy with 25 assists and Altman had 18.

Oxy hosts Pomona-Pitzer, in the second match of four in a row at home, on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Rush Gymnasium.
