LOS ANGELES – Junior midfielder Karina Garcia (Alhambra) scored on a dipping free kick from about 30 yards out in the 26th minute to pull the Occidental College women's soccer team within a goal of Pomona-Pitzer, but the team could not muster another goal and fell 4-1.
Garcia seemed as if she were trying to find a teammate in the penalty box, but Pomona-Pitzer's goalkeeper Annie Wedel misjudged the play and the ball found the net for the score.
But Garcia's goal wasn't enough to stem the momentum from the Sagehens' two strikes from earlier in the game. In the 9th minute Nicole Quilliam and Allie Tao combined to assist Sam Thompson in the box. Just three minutes later, Tao cut in from the left flank and drove a shot past Oxy's Tayler Renshaw (Phoenix, Ariz.) into the net.
Junior Elissa Minamishin (Waipahu, Hawaii) opened the second half with a shot on goal but it was saved by Wedel.
Minamishin registered two shots on goal.
Lauren Breynaert (Sammamish, Wash.), Katie McDonald (Pasadena), and Taryn Ng (Milpitas) each added a shot for the Tigers.
Renshaw made three saves.
The Sagehens (3-4, 2-3 SCIAC) added another goal in the 79th minute when Rachel Brownell's attempt bounced off the right post into the net and Tao tallied the final score with nifty individual moves cutting in from the left side.
The Tigers (1-6, 0-5 SCIAC) continue SCIAC play when they host La Verne on Saturday at 7 p.m.
