Box Score WHITTIER – Daniel Lawson scored the first two goals of his Oxy career, but the Occidental College men's soccer team could not overcome a slow start in a 4-2 loss at Whittier on Monday night.
After spotting two early goals to Whittier, Lawson cut the deficit to half in the 42nd minute when he found a loose ball in the box and chipped one over Whittier goalkeeper Jorge Rivas into the net.
Oxy (2-12, 1-10 SCIAC) kept within striking distance throughout early part of the second half, but did not have enough to close the gap.
Whittier (8-5-1, 7-3-1 SCIAC) broke through again in the 72nd minute when Tyler Crough poked in a cross from Gregorio Giorgi. Just five minutes later, Crough and Giorgi hooked up again as Crough tapped one into an open net to give the Poets a 4-1 lead and effectively put the game out of reach.
In the final minutes, Lawson curled a free kick past Rivas into the top left shelf for his second goal and the final tally of the game.
Alessandro Carotenuto, Alex Duvoisin and Marcus Brandford combined for eights shots and goalkeeper Theo Atkinson made seven saves for the Tigers.
Dylan Fortin and Jon Elvins scored the first two goals for Whittier.
The Tigers return home to face Redlands on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jack Kemp Stadium.
