LOS ANGELES — In their last home game on the Lower Field, the seniors on the Occidental men's soccer team made a statement. Unfortunately, an early deficit was too much for the Tigers to overcome as La Verne won 3-1.
David Gonzalez opened the scoring for La Verne in the 13th minute for La Verne. After a scrum in the box, the ball bounced out to Gonzalez at the top of the box and he buried his shot into the left corner past Oxy goalkeeper Ian Agrimis. Nathan Gonzalez added a second for La Verne in the 19th minute to give Leopards a 2-0 advantage.
Senior Christian Buchmann converted a penalty kick for the Tigers in the 37th minute to make the score 2-1.
Two other seniors for the Tigers nearly scored.
In the 3rd minute, Drake Berglund ripped a 30rd yard shot that sailed just wide of the left post. In the 30th minute, senior Marcus Brandford almost scored his second goal of the season against La Verne. Connor Freeman beat his man on the right wing and crossed a ball to the box towards Brandford. Brandford was able to redirect the ball towards goal, but his back heel was covered up by the keeper.
Nathan Gonzalez scored a penalty kick in the 90th minute for La Verne.
Ian Agrimis started his fourth game in goal for the Tigers this season. The Tigers (2-15, 1-13 SCIAC) take on Pomona-Pitzer in their last home game on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
