LA VERNE — The Occidental College men's water polo team picked up its first win of the season and lost three at the Gary Troy Convergence tournament this weekend.
Game 1: Occidental 18, Penn. St.-Behrend 6
Christian Erwin led with four goals, Tyler Wilson added three and Oxy earned its first victory of the season 18-6 over Penn. St.-Behrend in Game 1.
Oxy jumped out to a 9-1 lead on its way to the easy win. 10 different Tigers scored with Erwin and Wilson scoring more than three goals each for the first time in their careers.
"Our defense and transition was very effective today," Occidental coach Larry Zubrin said. "The guys were making some smart decisions and that made it an easy game for us."
Tigers goalie Patrick Fish anchored the defense with 10 first-half saves. Freshman Tudor Ceara blocked five shots in the second half.
Game 2: Fordham 10, Occidental 8
The Tigers were just 8 of 32 shooting and 2 of 10 on power plays in a 10-8 loss to NCAA Division I Fordham.
"We were rushing shots and trying to force the ball in the goal, which isn't our style," Zubrin said. "Fordham is a great team and I give them a lot of credit for taking us out of our game plan."
Samuel Akiyama and Kevin Coleman combined for five goals before fouling out late in the game.
"Losing those two in the fourth quarter was crucial," Zubrin said. "It really stalled our offense down the stretch."
Jack Stabenfeldt scored twice for Oxy and Patrick Maloney added a goal.
Game 3: Notre Dame (Ohio) 9, Occidental 8
Adam Florsheim made 17 saves in goal and Coleman led Oxy with four goals, but the Tigers struggled to put away key shots in a 9-8 loss to Notre Dame (Ohio) in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Game 4: Cal Baptist 17, Occidental 8
The Tigers lost to Cal Baptist 17-8 in their final game at the Gary Troy Convergence tournament.
Coleman continued his offesive assault with his third mult-goal game of the tournament and second consecutive hat-trick.
Erwin added two goals, while fellow senior Patrick Fish blocked a season high 13 shots in game.
