Box Score LOS ANGELES – The Occidental College men's soccer team and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps battled each other to a draw in the first half during which the teams combined for just seven total shots and neither side was able break out of the midfield.
But CMS found their attacking stride in the second half as Oxy fell 3-1 on Monday night at Jack Kemp Stadium.
The Stags opened their scoring in the 48th minute with a penalty kick by Jaison Kimura, who earned the shot after Garrett Schwab was shown a yellow card for his challenge in the penalty box.
Mehron Abdi scored CMS' second goal when he curled one towards the back post from the left corner of the box off a Jake Bishop assist and the third goal came when Joseph Romano slotted a Michael Crowley cross from the left side into the net after a deflection.
The Tigers got one back in the 83rd minute when an Oxy shot deflected off CMS defender Daniel Beer into the CMS net for an own goal.
Oxy (2-10, 1-8 SCIAC) had a couple of solid chances to get on the board earlier in the game. In the first minute, leading goal scorer Marcus Brandford received a good cross in the box from Morgan Bennett-Smith, but rushed the shot high.
The Tigers had a chance to tie the game a few minutes after the Kimura penalty kick when Brandford's headed pass off a Theo Atkinson goal kick freed up Munraj Singh down the middle for a one-on-one opportunity, but Singh's first touch was a bit heavy and CMS goalkeeper Alex Choi was able to pounce on the ball.
Bennett-Smith, Singh, Brandford and Thayer Fisher registered a shot each.
The Tigers return to action when they travel to Thousand Oaks to face Cal Lutheran on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
