CLAREMONT —Tori Larson (Denver, Colo.) scored six goals on eight shots and freshman goalkeeper Kristin Hee (Vancouver, Wash.) had eight saves.
But Izzy Laterzo found the net with 5:56 remaining and the Occidental College women's lacrosse team couldn't counter in an 11-10 loss at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the team's season opener on Saturday.
Larson had two different three-goal stretches that put the Tigers on top, but each time the lead slipped away.
After Oxy (0-1) spotted CMS four goals in the first 10 minutes, Larson scored three goals during a 5-0 run that put Oxy up 5-4 with 9:57 left in the first. In the second half, with her team down 8-6, Larson scored three unanswered, giving the Tigers a 9-8 lead with 12:10 left in the game.
Then Laterzo, who finished with four goals, scored shortly after, tying the game at nine with 10:15 to go. Around the 6-minute mark, Laterzo placed an eight-meter shot in the top right corner, putting CMS up for good.
Oxy's Beebe Finch-Sanders (Berkeley) tied the game at 10 with one of her two goals and Oxy's last goal of the day with 6:58 left.
Hee made scoring as difficult as possible for the Athenas (1-0) after taking over the goalkeeping duties in the second half, saving several open looks, with just four shots getting past her for points.
Madi Shove scored four goals for CMS.
Haley Gandsey (Oakland) and Isabel Osgood-Roach (Portland, Ore.) each had one goal for the Tigers.
Oxy has its first home game against Whittier on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
