Oxy women's water polo team picks up two wins in Northern California

MONTEREY BAY — The Occidental College women's water polo team opened its Northern California weekend road trip with two wins at the Cal State Monterey Bay Round Robin on Saturday.

The Tigers (6-12) travel to Santa Clara University for a pair of games on Sunday against Santa Clara and Harvard.

Game 1: Occidental 17, UC Santa Cruz 6

Lauren Ransom (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored a career-high four goals, 10 different Tigers found the net and the Occidental College women's water polo team put up a season-high 17 goals in a blowout victory over the Banana Slugs.

Ransom scored three times in the first quarter as Oxy built an early 5-0 lead.

Freshmen Brianna Caroll (Redwood City) and Lisa Najarian (Irvine) each scored their first collegiate goals in the game, while fellow first year standout Lizzy Kosin (LaGrange, Ill.) scored twice and added a team-high four steals.

Katya Soot (Albany, Ore.) and Nanea Fujiyama (Honolulu) each chipped in two scores for the Tigers, while Kelsey Shyba (Los Gatos), Lindsay Albino (Greenwich, Conn.), Morgan McClafferty (Huntington Beach) and Danielle Garcia (Houston, Texas) rounded out the Oxy's scoring with one.

Game 2: Occidental 10, Cal Sate Monterey Bay 8

Garcia's five goals, Fujiyama's seven steals and Rachel Adeleye's (Elizabeth, N.J.) 18 saves carried the Tigers to a victory over CSU Monterey Bay.

The two teams played back and forth through the first two quarters with Oxy maintaining a 5-4 advantage at the half.

With the score tied at six midway through the third, the Otters scored on a breakaway goal to take their first lead of the game, but it wouldn't last.

Garcia, who scored four goals in the second half, tied the game on the Tigers next possession.

Adeleye made a save that led to a counter-attack goal by Garcia to put Oxy back on top, and the senior attacker added another score before the end of the quarter to give Oxy a 9-7 advantage heading into the fourth.

Fujiyama came away with two steals late in the game to preserve the victory.
