Tigers struggle on Day 1 at Cal Lu Tourney

THOUSAND OAKS — The Occidental College women's water polo team got off to a slow start with two losses on the first day of competition at the Posada Royal Invitational hosted by Cal Lutheran University.

Oxy opened the tourney with a 16-4 loss to NCAA Division I No. 13 Cal State Northridge.

CSUN scored the game's first three goals and never looked back.

Oxy Cut the lead to 3-1 at the end of the first, but that was as close as they would get.

Trailing 7-2 at the half, Northridge reeled off three-straight goals to open the third quarter and put the game away.

The Tigers were led by junior Lindsay Albino (Greenwich, Conn.), who finished with two goals.

Oxy bounced back in their second game of the day, but came up short in an 8-5 loss to SCIAC rival Pomona-Pitzer in a non-conference game.

Fujiyama and junior Katya Soot (Albany, Or) led the Tigers with two goals each.

Pomona-Pitzer tied the game early in the second quarter, but Katie Gibbs' (Orinda) score late in the second gave Oxy a 2-1 halftime lead.

The third quarter belonged to the Sagehens as they scored four unanswered goals in the first 5 minutes of the second half to take a 5-2 lead.

Soot's first goal of the game cut Pomona-Pitzer's lead to two going into the final quarter.

Goalies Geneva Perez (Fresno) and Sofie Munoz (La Crescenta) combined for nine saves for Oxy.
