Box Score THOUSAND OAKS — The Occidental College men's soccer team opened its 2013 season about as well as it could have.
Michael Tonetti had a goal and an assist, and the Tigers (1-0) poured in two more in the first half and one at the end of the second, cruising to a 4-0 win over UC Santa Cruz at Cal Lutheran on Friday.
"I'm really happy with the intensity we came out with and the effort rewarded us with some early success," Oxy head coach Rod Lafaurie said. "This was a great first win against a very good Santa Cruz team."
John Richardson scored Oxy's second goal on a penalty kick, Marcus Brandford dribbled in Oxy's third goal on a cross from Tonetti and Christian Buchmann added the fourth with about 4 minutes remaining.
Oxy plays another neutral site game at Cal Lutheran against Pacific Lutheran on Sunday at 11 a.m.
"I'm proud of the men, but we still have work to do," Lafaurie said. "Today is just the start of something good, but progression is the key. We still have to keep getting better.
"We can't stop or be satisfied with today. We still have the entire season to play and improve."
