LOS ANGELES — After splitting two one-goal games last season, both teams were prepared for a close battle. However, in what was an anomaly for these two teams, Whittier cruised to a 6-1 victory over Occidental at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday night.

Devin Guthrie put Whitter ahead in the 8^th minute after finishing home a cross from Lucas Depinna. Francis Maxwell added another in the 42^nd minute when he headed home Pablo Gomez's corner kick. Whittier outshot Occidental eleven to two in the first half.

Francis Maxwell scored his second of the game off another corner kick in the 48th minute, and Lucas Depinna added another in the 60th minute.

Occidental then briefly regained its rhythm and starting putting pressure on goal. They were rewarded in the 62^nd minute when freshman Grayson Burdon placed a sublime shot from the top of the box into the right corner. Whittier responded quickly as Pablo Gomez scored in the 69^th minute, and Lucas Depinna added a sixth goal for the road team in the 79^th minute.

Occidental (1-4) has a quick turn around and hosts Cal Lutheran on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at Jack Kemp Stadium.
