LOS ANGELES — Freshman Grayson Burdon nearly scored his second goal in two games and the Occidental men's soccer team had possession for most of the first half.
But Salvador Orozco scored on a free kick late in the second and Cal Lutheran edged Occidental 1-0 in a nail biter on Monday.
Grayson Burdon almost put Occidental ahead midway through the first half. Crashing hard to the mouth of the goal, Burdon got on the end of a cross only to see his shot drift just wide.
The second half proved to be much more of an even battle with both teams coming close to scoring multiple times.
In the 73rd minute, Cal Lutheran got the goal they seeked. Looking to find a target in the box, Orozco hit a free kick that sailed over goalkeeper, Theo Atkinson's head. Michael Tonetti almost tied the game in the 89th minute for Occidental. After making a run to the back post during a corner kick, Tonetti put his shot just wide.
Occidental Outshot Cal Lutheran 10-9 and had eight corner kicks. Marcus Brandford led Oxy with three shots and Christian Buchmann and Connor Freeman each had two.
Cal Lutheran improves to 2-0-1 in SCIAC play and 4-1-1 overall. Occidental falls to 0-3 in SCIAC play and 1-5 overall.
Oxy returns to action on Saturday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 1 p.m.
