Box Score LOS ANGELES — The Occidental College women's soccer team was unstoppable on Wednesday night.
Elissa Minamishin led the way with two goals and an assist and the Tigers were up 3-0 after 20 minutes of play in a 5-0 win over Whittier in their SCIAC opener at Jack Kemp Stadium.
Oxy (2-1-1, 1-0 SCIAC) kept the pressure on the Poets (0-5, 0-1 SCIAC) throughout the game. Shortly after Minamishin opened the scoring on a lofting right-footed shot in the 7th minute, Kylie Takafuji freed up Michaela Tsuha with a through ball for Oxy's second goal in the 16th.
Minamishin set up McCaully Patch less than 5 minutes later, giving Oxy a 3-0 lead after early in the first half.
In the second, Takafuji found the net in the 53rd minute on an unassisted shot from the top of the box.
Minamishin scored her second goal in the 74th minute on a penalty kick after being taking down inside the box.
Patch was dynamic on set pieces, playing excellent balls into the Whittier box on nine corners and many free kicks. Twice she found Stephanie Welty's head for near goals on corners that sailed just high or wide.
Tsuha, Takafuji, Minamishin, Patch and Julie Khil kept Whittier under constant attack, but Oxy's defense was as good. Goalkeeper Tayler Renshaw only had to deal with four shots because Abigail Mitchell, Kelsey Hung, Welty and Taryn Ng were so solid in the back line.
Renshaw delivered her first shutout of the year.
A total of 167 turned up at Oxy's first night game if the year at Jack Kemp Stadium.
Oxy returns to action on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m.
