CLAREMONT — Morgan Bennett-Smith and Tod Kawada continued to tear up the conference and the Occidental men's soccer team clinched a spot in the four-team SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the first time in the program's history with a definitive 3-1 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.

The tournament has been in existence since 2007 and the Tigers have been close, but have never secured a spot. 

With two games to play, Oxy sits in second at 9-4-1 (28 points), just one point behind Pomona-Pitzer 9-3-2 (29 points). La Verne is in fifth at  7-7 (21 points) with no chance of catching the Tigers, even if Oxy loses its final two games.

Bennett-Smith got the scoring started in the 27th minute and Kawada provided the insurance goal on a free kick from Michael Tonetti in the 72nd. The two forwards might be the most dynamic pair of attackers in the conference. They've combined for 18 goals and nine assits on the season.

Zack Conrad had Oxy's second goal, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead heded into the locker room.

The Tigers also have a chance of winning the SCIAC regular season championship if they win out and Pomona-Pitzer loses or ties one of its remaining games. Oxy finishes the season at Chapman and then against La Verne at home. If the Tigers finish first or second in the regular season, they will host a SCIAC Playoff game on Nov. 6 at Jack Kemp Stadium.

The Tigers haven't lost since Oct. 1 and are 9-1-1 in their last 11 matches.
