Hawaiian Attack Defeats Redlands

Box Score

OCCIDENTAL 2, REDLANDS 0

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's soccer team has quite the Hawaiian connection.

Michaela Tsuha sets the table and Julie Khil puts it in the back of the net.

Against Redlands on Wednesday night, the Honolulu natives hooked up for the third time this season. Tsuha crossed the ball to the back post, Khil ran onto it, controlled it to her left and scored her fifth goal of the season.

Video Highlights

It was Tsuha's fifth assist.

Khil added her sixth goal of the season in the second half and Oxy looked in complete control as they beat the Bulldogs 2-0 at Jack Kemp Stadium.

In nine games so far this season, Khil and Tsuha have torched opposing defenses with six goals and seven assists between them.

Oxy has five women on its roster from Hawaii, including Khill and Tsuha. Kylie Takafuji (Honolulu), Dana Lim (Honolulu) and Kelsey Hung (Kaneohe, Hawaii) are the other three.

Players of the Game: Khil, who was named the SCIAC Female Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 23, scored her second goal on a cross from Camille Shrager 10 minutes into the second half.

Oxy goalkeeper Dallas Gunny and the Tigers' back line of Taryn Ng, Stephanie Welty, Abigail Mitchell and Hung held an opponent scoreless for the fourth time this season.

Turning Point: Khil's first goal put the Tigers in the driver's seat after a handful of early Redlands' chances.

In the 19th minute, Redlands' Savannah Laursen fired a shot that deflected off the cross bar and over the goal. Just moments later Tanya Haggen missed a 1-on-1 with Gunny just wide. Gunny was able to effectively cut down Haggen's angle, making the shot more difficult.

Stat of the Game: Oxy snaps a four-game losing streak of matches that were all decided by just one goal.

Season Impact: The Tigers complete the first round of the SCIAC double round robin with a 3-4 record and sits in fifth, one game behind Redlands for fourth place.

Oxy is 5-4 overall.

Next Game: The Tigers play their third home game in a row on Saturday, hosting Whittier at 11 a.m. on Lower Field (Grass Field). Oxy beat Whittier 5-0 on the road the first time they played them on Sept. 17. Tsuha led Oxy with three assists in that match, and Shrager and Khil each had a pair of goals.
