Tigers Challenge Strong Division I Field in the Desert

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Occidental women's water polo team stepped up their play at the Sun Devil Spring Invite hosted by NCAA Division I No. 5 Arizona State University.

-Oxy showed dramatic improvement from an earlier game against APU this season, when they lost 10-2.

-Morgan McClafferty's six steals were a single-game high for the Tigers this season.

-Lindsay Albino's four goals equaled her single-game best this season.

-The Tigers held the Cougars scoreless on four power play opportunities.

-Trailing 8-0 after the first quarter, the Tigers battled the Roadrunners to a one-goal game over the final three quarters.

-Oxy's 32 shots on goal were the most by the team in a game this season.

-The Tigers out-drew the Roadrunners by a 12-4 margin in exclusions, but could only convert four of their power-play opportunities.

-Albino's six steals equaled a single game career high

Game Notes:

-Geneva Perez's three steals and 12 saves were both single game highs for Oxy goalies in 2014.

-With eight exclusions drawn to Oxy's six, Marist is only the second team this season to out-draw the Tigers in power-play opportunities.  The eight kick-outs in the game also marked a season high for Oxy.

-Oxy's third quarter woes continued, allowing four of the Red Foxes 10 goals in the quarter.  On the season, 36 percent of the goals allowed by the Tigers have come in the third quarter.

-With the Tigers lone goal in the game Albino scored at least once in all four games of the tournament.  She extended her streak of consecutive games with at least one goal to six on the season.

-Albino's goal gives her 14 on the season, tied for the team lead with Katya Soot and Koral Gill

-ASU, ranked No. 5 in the nation for NCAA Division I, is the highest ranked team the Tigers have played since matching up against No. 4-ranked Division I UC Berkeley in 2011.

The Sun Devil invite ends Oxy's non-conference season.  The Tigers (#7 Division III) begin SCIAC play  at  Cal Lutheran University (#4 Division III) on March 19.
