THOUSAND OAKS — The No.-6 ranked Occidental women's water polo team came up just short in its SCIAC opener at Cal Lutheran, falling 10-8 against the No. 4 Cal Lutheran.
The Tigers had several opportunities throughout the game with a season-high with 32 shots on goal, but Cal Lu's zone defense proved more effective than Oxy's shooting accuracy.
Five different Tigers scored in the game, with Lizzy Kosin, Kelsey Shyba, and Katie Gibbs each netting two goals. For Gibbs and Kosin, it was their first multi-goal game of the year.
Oxy took a 1-0 lead on Lindsay Albino's first goal of the game early in the first quarter, but the team failed to capitalize on several shot attempts throughout the remainder of the quarter.
CLU didn't score its first goal of the game until the final minute of the period.
The two teams would trade jabs three times in the second quarter, with Oxy scoring at the :30 mark to knot the game at four heading into the half.
CLU outscored Oxy by a 4-2 margin in the third, only to watch the Tigers claw their way back to tie the score at eight with just over five minutes to play.
CLU's Jordan Card, responded with a back-hand from the center position on the Regal's very next possession for the game-winning goal.
Cal Lutheran added a final goal with 1:30 to play to seal the win.
