Home Pool Advantage Gives Whittier Edge in SCIAC Tourney

WHITTIER — The Occidental women's water polo couldn't keep up with host Whittier College in the First Round of the SCIAC Championship Tournament, losing 13-9 to the No. 3 seed.

The Tigers play the winner of Chapman and Caltech at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

From there, Oxy will have to battle its way through the consolation bracket in order to make any kind of jump in the SCIAC standings.

"It would have been nice to put together a better game and make a statement against the host school," Oxy head coach Larry Zubrin said. "We didn't get that done, but we don't have time to worry about it. We need to rebound quickly and put together a good game tomorrow night."

It is the third time the Tigers have lost to Whittier this season

Chapman and Caltech play at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The SCIAC Champion is determined by on a point system which includes regular season conference wins and points awarded based on the final standings of the conference tournament.

First place receives 10 points, 2nd = 8pts, 3rd=7pts, 4th=6pts, 5th=5pts, 6th=4pts, 7th=3pts, 8th=2pts, and 9t-1point.

The Tigers entered tournament play with four points after finishing the regular season with a 4-4 record in SCIAC play.  The SCIAC Champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championships May 8-11 at the University of Southern California.
