ORANGE — Lindsay Albino scored a pair of goals and Lizzy Kosin added a key score in the fourth quarter as the Occidental women's water polo team held off a late run by Chapman, escaping Allred Pool with a 7-6 win on Wednesday.
After Chapman cut Oxy's lead to 6-4, Kosin countered with a fast-break goal early in the fourth quarter. From there, the Tigers defense took over with key stops.
"I was proud that our team kept its cool and came up with some great defensive stops to get the win," Oxy head coach Larry Zubrin said.
Morgan McClafferty had three steals and two assists for the Tigers.
Oxy goalkeeper Sofie Munoz made 10 saves.
"(Munoz) is stepping up at pivotal times for us," Zubrin said. "It gives our team a ton of confidence when they know the goalie has their back."
The Tigers used a strong defense and counter attack to take an early lead, extending a 5-1 advantage by the third quarter.
The Panthers made a game out of it, outscoring the Tigers 3-2 in the third.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, hosting La Verne at 11 a.m. at Taylor Pool.
