Box Score Pomona-Pitzer 1, Occidental 0
By Joseph Compagno
Play of the Game: With 8:22 left in the game and Occidental in desperate need of a goal, senior defender Abigail Mitchell ripped a 25-yard screamer inches over the goalpost. It came off a deflected free kick from Taryn Ng and was one of the Tigers' best looks on goal on Wednesday night.
Player of the Game: Dallas Gunny was commanding at the goalkeeper position all night. She recorded four big saves and allowed only one goal. Gunny looked like a true veteran despite her freshman status and has been solid in goal all season long.
Turning Point: Late in the 44th minute, Pomona-Pitzer's Jamie Kerester scored undoubtedly the easiest goal of her career after a miscue from the Occidental defense. The match reached a stalemate after the point was scored, as Oxy was unable to counter it and ultimately took the 1-0 loss.
Stat of the Match: Forward Camille Shrager led the Tigers' offense with four shots on goal. Kylie Takafuji and Michaela Tsuha added two shots apiece.
From the Coach: "Pomona gave us a lot of trouble in the first half," head coach Colm McFeely said. "Despite all the good play they had, we probably had three or four slightly better scoring opportunities."
Season Impact: Today's loss marked the first defeat of the season for the Tigers. Thanks to two key wins to start the season, the team still remains in good standing in SCIAC play. The next couple of games will test the team's ability to recover from a tough loss, which McFeely feels they are fully capable of doing.
Next Game: The Tigers play their third game of the SCIAC schedule at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
