LOS ANGELES — Anna De Groot made 10 saves and Carly Zurcher scored three goals on six shots as the Occidental women's water polo team gave Claremont-Mudd-Scripps a scare.

But Oxy had a few costly turnovers in fourth quarter and CMS' Haley Connor scored the game-winning goal with 1:48 to play, beating the Tigers 11-10 at Taylor Pool on Saturday.

"It was tied 8-8 going into the fourth," Oxy head coach Jon Bonafeded said. "We had an 8-min game to win it, which is ironic because we do that a lot in practice. We just didn't quite come up with enough clutch plays."

The Tigers, which fall to 1-19, had a pair of good looks at the goal to tie, but didn't connect. 

"I think it shows that we're ready to win a conference game," Bonafede said. "It could have been today. Chapman's coming in on Wednesday and I think it's going to be the same situation. We're going to have to make plays when we need to."

De Groot came up big in goal, putting the Tigers in position to beat a good CMS team. She also had a pair of steals.

"It was her best performance of the season," Bonafede said. "We played really good water polo and when we broke down, Anna was there."

Katie Gibbs had a pair of goals and drew four exclusions for the Tigers. Nina Wheeler scored two goals and Lizzy Kosin had one before fouling out early in the fourth quarter.
