Oxy Falls in Extra Innings to Redlands

Box Score

LOS ANGELES — Despite a ninth-inning rally that sent the game into extra innings, the Occidental College baseball team lost Game 3 to Redlands, 10-6 in 10 innings at Anderson Field on Saturday.

Redlands takes the three-game series 2-1, improving to 10-5 overall and 7-5 in SCIAC play.

The Tigers fall to 11-4 and 9-3, putting them in fourth place, holding a two-game lead over Redlands and just one game back of La Verne (10-2) for third. Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer are tied for first at 8-1.

Trailing 5-4 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Oxy's Jonathan Wong got the big hit, knocking a single to center field that brought home Devon DeRaad for the tying run.

But in the top of the 10th, the Redlands bats rallied for five runs to go up 10-5.

The Tigers scored a sixth run in the bottom of the tenth when Jake Chambers got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but they couldn't rally for more.

Oxy scored three runs in the second on RBI-doubles by Brady Fuller and Johnathan Brooks, and then one more in the fourth when Wong singled in A.J. Libunao

The Tigers led until Redlands took a 5-4 lead with two runs in the eighth, taking advantage of an Oxy throwing error that extended the inning.

Libunao and Brooks both went 2 for 6 and Wong was 2 for 4. DeRaad was 1 for 3 with three walks.

Michael Collins earned the win for Redlands and John White was credited with the save.

Oxy starter Riley James pitched well, throwing 7.1 innings with three runs against him, before leaving the game with the lead.

Next Game: The Tigers begin a five-game string of non-conference home games, starting with Drew University on March 11. Oxy returns to SCIAC play for a three-game series with Whittier on March 20.
