Box Score LOS ANGELES — Sierra Slack and the Occidental women's lacrosse team did it again.
The freshman who's leading the Tigers in goals scored this season, went off for five more on Wednesday night, upping her season total to 39 and helping Oxy overcome a sluggish start to crush Chapman 13-4 at Jack Kemp Stadium.
After falling behind 3-0 and going scoreless for the first 20 minutes, Slack got the Tigers on the scoreboard with Oxy's first goal and then the floodgates opened. Oxy went on a 13-1 run to win easily, jumping into a three-way tie with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands for second place in the SCIAC standings.
The Tigers, currently ranked No. 3 in the West Region, improve to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in SCIAC play. Chapman falls to 6-5 and 4-5, falling to fifth.
Oxy has won nine of its last 11 games dating back to Feb. 28.
Chapman goalie Tara Sonnemaker was a big part of Oxy's struggles finding the net early on, making nine of her 10 saves in the first half.
Oxy's defense led by Kristin Feinberg, Monica Rosenkranz and Alessandra Quaroni, kept the Tigers close, holding the Panthers to just four goals in the first half and none in the second.
Feinberg finished with a season-high five caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Beebe Finch Sanders and Rebecca Reese each recorded a hat-trick with three goals, and Alida Beck tossed in two.
Gretchen Rodenberger led the Panthers with three goals, all scored in the first half.
Hitting Triple Digits: Finch Sanders surpassed 100 goals for her career in Oxy's 16-12 win at Redlands on April 11.
Next Game: The Tigers play their final regular season game on Saturday against Whittier at 1 p.m. at Jack Kemp Stadium.
