LOS ANGELES — Katie Gibbs scored three goals on her senior day, Zulema Iboa-Garcia tossed in a game-high five and the Occidental women's water polo team racked up 25 steals, cruising past Caltech 17-2 at Taylor Pool on Wednesday.
Carly Zurcher had a good afternoon setting up her teammates, finishing with three goals and four assists. Lizzy Kosin also had a hat-trick with three goals and Savannah D'Orazio, Kyla Houck and Amanda Akiyama each added one.
Mirei Yasuda and Nina Wheeler each had four steals for the Tigers.
Souma Kannan led the Beavers with a pair of first-half goals.
Oxy gets its first SCIAC win of the season, improving to 2-23 overall and 1-6 in SCIAC play. Caltech falls to 0-17 and 0-7.
From the Coach: "It was a good overall performance by everybody. We executed our game plan, hit shots and converted our 6-on-5 opportunities," Oxy head coach Jon Bonafede said. "Everyone played solid defense and we hope to take this momentum into Redlands on Saturday."
Gibbs, Oxy's only senior, was honored by her teammates, coaches and fans with a brief pregame tribute. Prior to the game, Oxy's new scoreboard had a slide show of photos of Gibbs scrolling through during warm ups.
