Tigers Crush Poets on Senior Day

Box Score

LOS ANGELES — Oxy's young guns got hot on senior day and the Tigers put together their best defensive effort of the season, cruising to a 16-2 rout of Whittier at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday.

Led by Oxy's defensive unit (Kristin Feinberg, Monica Rosenkranz, Alessandra Quaroni and Katie Leyden), the Tigers held the Poets scoreless for most of the first half, finally conceding a goal with 2:36 left in the period, and only allowed one more in the second half.

Oxy had held opponents to just four goals in three contests this year, but never less than its dominating performance against Whittier.

The Tigers did it by causing 23 of Whittier's 24 turnovers, many of them in transition, limiting Whittier to just 7 of 17 on clear attempts and just six total shots on the game.

Oxy freshman Sierra Slack led the way on offense with four goals and three assists, and sophomore Rebecca Reese also scored four goals and had an assist. Brita Loeb and Ciara Byrne each scored a pair of goals and Beebe Finch Sanders, Mackenzie Wright, Alida Beck and Samantha Stewart rounded out Oxy's offensive effort with one goal each.

Angelina Cuevas had both of Whittier's scores.

Finch Sanders finished with four assists and helped Oxy win the draw battle 12-8, controlling a game-high six.

Oxy improves to 10-5 overall and 6-4 in SCIAC play. Whittier falls to 2-13 and 0-10.

Next Game: Oxy will be seeded No. 2, No. 3 or No. 4 for the SCIAC Championship Tournament, depending on the results of the two remaining SCIAC games that are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday and 7 p.m. on Monday.

Oxy, which began the day in a three-way tie for second with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands, will be the No. 2 seed if both CMS and Redlands lose Saturday or Monday.

If Claremont-Mudd-Scripps or Redlands win, Oxy will be the No. 3 seed, and if they both win, the Tigers will be No. 4.

If the Tigers are No. 2, they will have a bye to the SCIAC semifinals, hosting that game on April 25 at Jack Kemp Stadium. If they are No. 3 or No. 4, they will host a First Round Game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

SCIAC Championship: The SCIAC Championship tournament is an extension of the regular season in the sport of women's lacrosse with a point system determining the conference champion. Each regular season victory counts as one point, one point is given for a win or a bye in the first round, three points are given for a win and two for a loss in the semifinals, and five points are given for a win and four for a loss in the championship game.

Senior Day: Feinberg, Rosenkranz, Beck, Finch Sanders and Adrienne Ruth were joined by family and honored with a brief pregame ceremony after successful four-year careers with the Tigers.
