Box Score LOS ANGELES — Alida Beck scored all four of her game-high four goals in the second half, including the game-winner, Mackenzie Wright saved the day with a key caused turnover and the Occidental women's lacrosse team earned an important SCIAC win, knocking off first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 9-8 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Thursday.
The Tigers improve to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in SCIAC play. CMS falls to 7-3 and 4-2.
Beck dodged to her right and buried the last shot of the game with 1:51 left, putting Oxy up for good. The senior also scored twice late in the second half to tie the game, helping Oxy overcome a 4-2 halftime deficit.
Wright, who had one assist, prevented CMS from getting one last offensive look with less than 1 minute to play. After an Oxy turnover deep in Athenas territory, she caught Katie Hill from behind just as CMS was starting its clear, knocking the ball loose from her stick. Sierra Slack was there to swoop up the ground ball and the Tigers ran out the clock to avenge a one-goal loss to the Athenas in Claremont earlier this season.
Alessandra Quaroni took a ground ball from her defensive end coast-to-coast, scoring to put Oxy up 8-7 with 9:28 left — the team's first lead of the second half.
Beebe Finch Sanders was all over the field for Oxy, scoring three goals, with five draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Oxy goalkeeper Adrienne Ruth and the Tigers' defensive back line of Quaroni, Kristin Feinberg, Monica Rosenkranz and Brita Loeb played excellent defense, especially in the first half, holding CMS scoreless for almost the first 20 minutes of the game.
Ruth finished with 10 saves.
After two early Finch Sanders goals, the Tigers held a 2-0 lead until CMS scored four unanswered goals, beginning with 11:29 left in the first half.
Oxy had chances on offense in the first half, but failed to convert on three free position shots late in the period as CMS goalkeeper Kate Anello made impressive saves.
Next Game: The Tigers play the next two of their four remaining SCIAC games on the road, beginning with Pomona-Pitzer on April 8 at 7 p.m.
