Box Score CLAREMONT — Alida Beck scored a goal on the Oxy's women's lacrosse team's first offensive posession, Beebe Finch Sanders followed it up with back-to-back goals and everything seemed to be clicking as the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 at Pomona-Pitzer in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
But Oxy's offense went cold and the SCIAC Champion Sagehens found their stride, going on a 7-0 run that lasted well into the second half to beat the Tigers for the fourth time this season, 7-5 in Claremont on Sunday.
Oxy finishes the year 11-7, earning a second-place SCIAC finish and the program's second NCAA tournament appearance in just its sixth year.
From the Coach: "We are disappointed with the result and felt we could have played a little better," Oxy head coach Stephanie Janice Mark said. "We had a great season though and our team should be proud of their effort throughout the entire year."
Pomona-Pitzer advances to play No. 1 Trinity (Conn.) next weekend in the Sweet Sixteen.
Led by Monica Rosenkranz, Kristin Feinberg, Katie Leyden and Alessandra Quaroni, the Tigers played outstanding defense in the first half, holding the Sagehens scoreless until Hannah Christenson finally found the net with 7:27 to play in the first half.
It woke Pomona-Pitzer up.
The Sagehens rattled off three more goals to go into the locker room tied 3-3 and then caught fire early in the second half.
Oxy's drought stemmed primarily from turnovers, which prevented the Tigers from getting quality looks at the cage in the second half. Meanwhile the Sagehens won draws and opened up a 7-3 lead through the first 15 minutes of the second half.
Christenson, Rebecca Long and Sarah Markowitz led Pomona-Pitzer with two goals each.
Finch Sanders, who finished with two goals and an assist, finally ended Oxy's cold stretch, scoring with 14 minutes left.
Rebecca Reese added a goal with 4.2 seconds left for the Tigers.
